John D. McCarty’s lifelong bond with the ocean began at age five, joining his father on boating trips in Southern California. From family fishing outings to summers working on sportfishing charters in high school, time on the water became central to his identity. Even in college, he was drawn to marinas and the calm of the waterfront, a reflection of his enduring passion for the sea.
After college, John began his career as Manager of the Boat Yard and Fiberglass Department at Schock Boats in Newport Beach, where he developed his expertise in boat building, repair, and installation. He and his wife, Judy, later acquired the sportfishing charter Fin Fever, launching their successful yacht charter business focused on offshore fishing trips. As demand grew, they expanded their fleet to accommodate peak seasons. John also collaborated with Scott and Marie Schock on new boat construction projects, specializing in engine installations, electrical systems, and electronics. Balancing both ventures, he spent roughly 200 days a year captaining charters while building vessels for clients.
